India is known for its wide range of spices and fennel seeds are exported in large amount due to its benefits. Fennel seeds or saunf have always been recommended by mothers and grandmothers to treat gastric troubles. 

Around 50 per cent of world’s population harbours this pathogen in upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, but the prevalence of this infection varies worldwide, being as low as 10 per cent in developed Western nations to as high as 80 per cent in developing countries including India,1. Clinical manifestations occur only in approximately 20 percent2.

Gastritis is a condition that refers to the inflammation of the stomach lining. This inflammation is sometimes caused by eroding of the tissue that surrounds the inner part of the stomach, medically referred to as the gastric mucosa.

The classification of gastritis is entirely dependent on the nature of the damage, and as such, it can either be acute or chronic. Acute gastritis develops suddenly while chronic gastritis develops gradually over a long period of time.

Fennel seeds are recommended for the natural treatment of gastritis as they relax the muscles of the digestive system. This soothes the stomach and helps reduce its inflammation, thanks to the seeds’ anti-inflammatory properties.

Fennel seeds are also ideal for managing the symptoms of gastritis, making it easy to manage bloating and indigestion.
